2017 Young Winemakers' Dinner

We were thrilled to host our Fourth Annual Young Winemakers’ Dinner on Tuesday, May 30th in partnership with the Napa Valley Vintners and Auction Napa Valley. This evening—a celebration of collaboration and community—honored three young talents: Alex & Graeme MacDonald (MACDONALD); Haley Wight (Hayfork Wine); and Adam McClary & Gabrielle Shaffer (Gamling & McDuck). 


Each vintner poured their wines alongside a tasting menu crafted by Chef Christopher Kostow and his kitchen team. A portion of the proceeds benefitted Auction Napa Valley, which funds children’s education and community health here in the Napa Valley. 



MACDONALD, Alex & Graeme MacDonald

Graeme and Alex MacDonald are fourth generation Napa Valley grape-growers who steward a fabled vineyard. In 1954, their great-grandparents purchased a cherry orchard nestled in the Oakville benchlands and part of the historic To Kalon Vineyard. Their family planted the first vines on the property since prohibition. The resulting grapes were sold exclusively to Robert Mondavi and included in his To Kalon and early Opus One bottlings since their inception. Today, the brothers craft MACDONALD wine from their family's 60, 40 and 20 year old Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Only the amount of wine that can be made with their own hands is produced.


Hayfork Wine, Haley Wight

Haley Wight was born in Napa: the daughter of a mother raised on a cattle ranch in Yountville and a father raised on his family’s Lewelling Ranch, Haley has been producing Cabernet Sauvignon since 2006, just one year after she fell in love with winemaking as a harvest intern in a rustic cellar at the top of Spring Mountain. Haley’s hands have always been in the soil: whether working as a backcountry ranger, a farm worker, or a winemaker, she has always felt a strong connection to the land.  Haley is honored to continue her family’s farming legacy here in the Napa Valley and strives to make balanced and beautiful wines.


Gamling & McDuck, Adam McClary & Gabrielle Shaffer

Gamling & McDuck is a winemaking duo comprised of Gabrielle Shaffer and Adam McClary. They met in Minneapolis 11 years ago after they both spent time working in different facets of the restaurant industry. A kitchen table conversation about varietal correctness inspired a move to Napa where they pursued education at UC Davis and took on internships at several different wineries, including Miner, Mayacamas and Harlan Estate; their first vintage of Gamling & McDuck was produced in 2009. Gabrielle and Adam aim to exemplify and transcend the Loire Valley varietals of Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc. They practice sustainable farming, utilize cool native fermentations and eschew additions and manipulation.
